I don't think we need a major overhaul of players but I don't think the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and terry should be guaranteed their starting place.

I would look at the england team like they do the english cricket test team who build towards the next ashes series against the aussies which is every 2 years like the championships are (euro's/wc). I would stick the likes of Joe Hart in goal and Adam Johnson in the team and Gabby and Cahill etc. and tell them play well play yourself into the team and you'll be playing the next European Championships. If that means we play away to Bolivia and lose 2-0 because we are experimenting and letting the new bread get experience then that's what happens. Keep Gerrard and Lamps in the team but don't keep playing them in midfield like we have and say "oh maybe they will start to play well" NO they can't play together.

We need to start building a team and not a bunch of individuals and trying to manufactuor (sp) positions for them.

I find it amazing that some people are more concerned with who sings the national anthem. The question i have is why should God save the queen and not the people of the nation? I mean what have the royals done for the little man except tax us?

Anyways the problem lies with the mentality. Hard work and effort it seems are more important than skill and intelligence on the field. When an Englishman is under pressure the instinct is to hoof the ball, the other Euro nations try to keep the ball at all costs, even Ze Germans through out their footballing history have passed and kept the ball better than England. Its time for a change in our footballing mentality and more training needs to be done on the fields all round the country with an emphasis on ball work as opposed to making athletes. The way i see it you can turn a footballer in to an athlete but not the other way.

I agree about the anthem, but I think its more recognised for English football than the Queen anyway.

Wherenever I hear or sing it I know im thinking of 3 Lions. Its a fantastic sounding tune too, by far better than any of the other puffy anthems.

After watching the final...Im glad we never got to the final We'd be slaughtered.
My role on this forum is to break up the serious, educated and enlightening posts with random crap that amuses me in my sleep deprived state.

Agree with a lot of this. From a young age, football is a pretty natural sport to most who enjoy it and have ability. But when kids start joining teams they're instantly coached to hoof the ball in dangerous situations... and there's a real emphasis to "not make a mistake" rather than actually promoting how to play the game properly. We need to stop this fear of making mistakes at a young age and let everyone play properly.

I don't think Spain hardly ever play the ball further than 10 yards until they're in the final third. Its dead simple to pass a ball less than 10 yards so let's encourage our kids to do it.

I saw Trevor Brooking not long ago talk about a shortage of coaches in the country which amazed me - I thought there'd be too many people wanting to do it. As a nation we're about to go through a period where a lot of people (e.g. in the public sector) will lose their jobs. So why not offer incentives into training to become a coach? There's plenty of money in the game and its about time the FA did something useful for the country.

In terms of the team and the immediate future, we've seen so much around how good teams out perform good individuals - but as a nation our fans and press are the quickest to jump on the bandwagon when there is a certain player out of the team who they think should be playing. If Capello dropped Gerrard, Lampard, Terry etc... I'd give it 3 bad games before there was a nation-wide campaign to get them back into the squad!

The change in thinking needs to come from the FA, the management AND the press and fans as well. Until that happens we'll always be in the same position!

Ps - If you're still reading this novel then you deserve credit!

money & power seem to be the problem coupled with the socialist lead movement away from competative sport in schools in the 70`s & 80`s
Backin the early 60`s the national Sports Accademy was set up @ Lilleshall but it failed because of lack of enthusiasm and because the likes of the Football League thought it would be better to go it alone but did not want to put real money into setting it up properly !

It's just that. My friends son mopped up in his last year of primary school at sports day, 100m, 200m, football, you name it.
Guess what he got - nothing. When my friend asked the sports teacher why he wasn't being encouraged at something he's clearly got a talent for they said it could make the other kids feel bad.
And to make it worse, the last placed kids got 'school awards' for trying.
Any wonder we're not great at competitive sports?

Money and socialism? And we had a right wing prime minister for the WHOLE of the 80s!

I'm calling twaddle on you cgale. TWADDLE!

Our current government, after saying there should be an enquiry into the England team failure at the World Cup, have announced decimating cuts to sport funding. Talk about answering your own questions.

yes but the majority of County halls were left wing controlled . As forthe FA`s money that`s controlled by a select few League chairmen

I am worry that there doesn't seem that much outstanding young talent. Of this squad Rooney, Johnson, Hart,Lennon are about the only ones that have another world cup in them. Off the top of my head the likes of Rodwell,Wilshere,Delph,Loach and Gibbswill all be doing well in the Prem by 2014 with any luck. Obviously there is time for someone currently in a Prem youth team to burst onto the scene a definate rebuilding needed.

I also think Delfouneso and Sturridge look like there going to be good players, possible strike partnership at 2014
