Martin O’Neill has confirmed that a bid has been made for right-back Luke Young and the club being bandied about on the internet is Roy Hodgson’s Liverpool. The versatile defender is apparently mulling over the move to Anfield where he would become direct competition for England right-back Glen Johnson. Question is though, do we replace with a better target that is available or should we look to develop Eric Lichaj to save a bit of money.
"There has been an offer from a football club, which Luke is mulling over and if it doesn't materialize then he would also join us [in Portugal] because he needs to play some football soon," said O'Neill. "We will see how that develops."
For me although I think Habib Beye is a decent defender, he isn’t good enough to keep us challenging for the top six positions in the league and although Lichaj’s inexperience could also be detrimental, it’s a much more plausible risk to take. We all know that money is tight at the moment with an apparent sell to buy policy in place, so saving money where we can, could free up money for more potent needs in the squad.
With Young being thirty-one, the £2.5 million fee being quoted about will also come in handy during the summer and having watched the youngster in the last few friendlies, he looks to have improved alot since last summer where he was getting booked far too much for some very crude challenges.
I’d expect this won’t be a drawn out affair and that Luke will move in the next couple of days and I’d like to take this time to wish him all the best should he move, he’s always been a favourite with the Villa fans and have always shared in his frustrations.
Good luck Luke.
